Externally Referred Clients Welcome!
Kaiser subscribers can request an authorization to see a therapist outside of Kaiser. If you can get an authorization to see a Carelon Behavioral Health provider, we can help you. You will need to contact Kaiser first using this information. Once you have an authorization, you can request services from us with the form beow.

To get a referral to an external clinician covered by your Kaiser plan:
Your first step is to call the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Mental Health External Referral Care Navigators toll-free at 1-833-392-0064. You’ll talk to someone from Kaiser to ask whether you can be referred to a Carelon Behavioral Health provider. If necessary, name Shine a Light Counseling Center as the provider, and Timothy Hartnett (director of the agency), as your (supervising) clinician. You may be asked to contact your local Kaiser mental health clinic before you are approved for a referral.
Services received through an external clinician without a referral to that specific provider are generally not covered.

Good Faith Estimate
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your therapy sessions will cost. Your fee will be set according to a sliding scale, in collaboration with your therapist, prior to your first counseling session. Total costs depend upon the number of sessions you choose to utilize.
If you have private health insurance and we are not in-network with your plan, please be aware that your costs for therapy may be less by using an in-network provider. This will depend upon your plan's deductible amounts and co-payments. In some cases, counseling at Shine a Light is less costly than using private insurance.
If you hope to use "out of network" benefits through your private insurance, please be aware that many plans will not reimburse for services provided by trainees. Please request an Associate level therapists for out-of-network billing.
